Introducing Communities: Find Your People on Calln

Calln started with a simple idea: press a button, talk to a real stranger, no account required. That hasn't changed. But a random call is, by design, a one-time thing — the moment it ends, that connection is usually gone for good. A lot of you told us the same thing in different words: sometimes you find a great conversation and just wish there were an easy way to keep it going with more than one person at a time.

That's what Communities is. It's a group chat space built the same way the rest of Calln is — free, straightforward, and without any pressure to perform for an audience. You can create your own, or find one that already matches something you care about.

Public and Private, Your Choice

When you create a community, you decide how open it is.

Either way, you're never locked in. You can leave a community at any time, and rejoin later with the same invite link if it's public, or send a fresh request if it's private.

Real Conversations, Not a Message Board

Communities are built to feel like an actual live conversation, not a forum you check once a week. That means:

• Live typing indicators — you can see when someone in the room is mid-reply, the same as you'd expect from any messaging app.
• Message replies — quote a specific message so it's clear exactly what you're responding to, even in a busy room.
• Photo sharing — send an image to the group, which automatically blurs itself after a couple of minutes as an added layer of privacy.
• Unread badges — so you always know at a glance which communities have something new since you last checked.

If You're Running a Private Community

Creating a private community makes you its admin, which comes with one job: reviewing who wants in. Every join request shows up in the community's info panel, where you can approve or decline it with a single tap. Nothing gets automatically approved — you're always the one deciding who joins.

This is intentionally simple for now. There's no complex role system, no co-admins, no moderation dashboard. If you're building a space you actually care about keeping small and intentional, that's the whole point.

How to Get Started

You'll find Communities from the navigation bar on both the website and the app. From there, you can browse what's already active, search by name, or tap Create to start your own — pick a name, a short description, and whether it's public or private, and you're in.

Joining a public community is instant. Joining a private one sends a request, and you'll see its status change from "Requested" to "Joined" the moment the admin approves it — no need to keep refreshing.
